Friendly Fires + Hockey @ Leeds Academy: 6th May 2009

Third time I’ve seen the Friendly Fires in 12 months - support to the Kaisers, NME tour and tonight. Originally booked for Leeds Met, The FF were moved to the Academy after the success of that NME tour and their debut album.

Support came from Hockey who’s drummer had the coolest haircut and moustache – If I had hair…..that’s how I’d have it. The lead singer looked like one of the kids from Fame! They didn’t really do it for me.

The FF played almost an hour of pumping dance tunes and boy were the crowd up for it “We’re here to party” – oh yes! The drumming and electronic beats energise the songs live in a way they don’t on record. Not sure what the brass section added to the sound but I’m all for experimentation - It’s not often you see an electric guitar played with a vacuum cleaner (I’m more of a dust-pan-and-brush-on-a-banjo-man myself) and the drummer had a fab elongated symbol (looked like an orange that’s been peeled in one piece). “Get on Board” they suggested …..we already are. Left me wanting more.
Thanks to Tony for the pics
